In 2003, I was in Seattle for a conference. At the end of the second full day of back to back speaker panels, I went to Barnes and Noble and almost walked into a display of paperback novels. The sparkly covers were irresistible and featured a blond girl, vampires and coffins.
I bought the first three books of the Sookie Stackhouse series:

Dead Until Dark
Living Dead in Dallas
Club Dead

One week later, I closed the cover of the third book and anxiously waited for the release of Dead to the World.

I was a devoted fan of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. But Harris’s stories were fresh and new.

Whereas Anne Rice’s world was dark and serious, Charlaine Harris created a colorful and funny universe. She managed to tackle serious topics like racism and prejudice with a light touch. Harris makes her point but doesn’t beat the reader over the head with it.
